NEW ORLEANS - The University of Houston used superior depth on both of its rosters to sweep the 2000 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday at Tad Gormley Stadium.

The Cougar men, who captured the team title for the fourth straight season, scored 74 points in a seven-event span Saturday to take a lead it would not relinquish. During the three-day meet, the Houston men won four individual titles and a relay to outdistance runner-up Tulane, 165-122. Cincinnati finished third with 110.50 points.

The UH women were equally as dominant, leading wire-to-wire to capture its second title in three years. The Houston women earned six individual titles and won by 40 points over runner-up Tulane, 162-122. South Florida finished third with 111.50 points.

For his efforts, UH coach Leroy Burrell earned Conference USA Coach-of-the-Year honors on both the men's and women's side. Houston's Robert Foster was named the C-USA men's Freshman of the Year.

Tulane swept the Athlete-of-the-Year honors, as sophomore Solomon Kandie was the men's winner, and senior Hanne Lyngstad won on the women's side. UNC Charlotte's Naomi Wendland was named the women's Freshman of the Year.
