Tulane Green Wave Hosts Conference USA Championships
Start Time: 3:30 p.m. (Fri.), 11:00 a.m. (Sat.), 11:00 a.m. (Sun.)
Site: Tad Gormley Stadium (New Orleans)
NEW ORLEANS - As the track and field postseason begins, the Tulane track and field program will host the Conference USA Championships this weekend at Tad Gormely Stadium inside New Orleans beautiful City Park. The three-day event will kick off on Friday, May 11 with the multi-event competitions, run all day on Saturday, May 12 and Sunday, May 13 with a champion being crowned in the Crescent City.
Senior Garrett Myer will kick-off the meet for Tulane when he begins the decathlon on Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. Myer will participate in the 100 meter, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400 meter on the opening day of the meet, while completing the ten-part event with the 110 meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500 meter events on Saturday.
Reigning Conference USA javelin champion Ana Ruzevic will look to defend her title and improve her national seed heading into the NCAA Championship portion of the season. The senior has a season-best throw of 51.32-meters, tops in C-USA, and ranks second in the East Region and tenth nationally in the event. She enters as the top seed in the competition and is one of just two javelin competitors to have thrown the instrument over 48-meters this season.
Kasey Rodgers will look to push her name towards the top of the regional qualifying list over the weekend in the 100 and 200 meter events. The senior has seen steady improvement throughout the season and set season-best times in both events two weeks ago at the Golden Eagle Classic. Rodgers ran 11.64 in the 100 and 24.27 in the 200, which ranks her fifth and eleventh, respectively, entering the championships.
The duo of Estefany Cruz and Briana Santiago both enter the triple jump finals with a chance to claim some valuable points for the Green Wave. Cruz enters with the 25th best triple jump mark in the country - 16th in the East Region - and is currently the second best in C-USA with a season-long jump of 12.81-meters. Cruz, who earned Honorable Mention All-America honors during the indoor season in the event, will look to claim her first Conference USA crown after finishing second during the indoor season in the event.
Santiago has set career-best mark in each of her last two meets and broke the 12-meter barrier two weeks ago at the Golden Eagle Classic. The sophomore soared 12.06-meters to break her previous best of 11.96 meters from the South Alabama Invitational.
The top 48 competitors in both the East and West Regions will advance to their respective NCAA Regional Meets to be held at the University of North Florida (East) and University of Texas at Austin (West). The NCAA Regional meets will take place from May 24-26, 2012.
