April 28, 2000

PHILADELPHIA -- The Tulane track and field team opened competition at the 106th running of the Penn Relay Carnival with a pair of solid relay efforts and a top-five finish in the javelin.

Sophomore Catherine Betz finished fifth in the women's javelin throw with a mark of 153 feet, 7 inches. The Metairie, La., native, who has already provisionally qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track Championships, is Conference USA's top javelin thrower.

Also performing well for the Green Wave were a pair of relay teams. The women's 4x100-meter relay team finished third in the women's college final with a time of 45.74 seconds. The quartet of Asha James, Quasheba Lee, Lana Garner and Rebecca Murphy advanced by virtue of its time of 46.18 seconds in the preliminary heats.

The men's 4x100-meter relay team of Zander Robinson, Nick Narcisse, Alexander Lakhanpal and Jamal Jones posted a time of 41.80 seconds in its preliminary heat and did not advance.

The Tulane track and field team continues competition through Saturday at the historic Penn Relay Carnival. The event is hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.
