T&F Look to Build Off Last Week's Dominating Performances at Southeastern Lion Invitational, LSU Alumni Gold

NEW ORLEANS - One week after 16 athletes set new personal bests and five won six event titles at the South Alabama Invitational the Tulane track and field team will stay in state this weekend as they compete in the Southeastern Louisiana Lion Invitational on Friday and the LSU Alumni Gold on Saturday.

Last week in Mobile, Ala., freshman Devon Breaux won the long jump and high jump event titles with jumps of 7.01 meters (23' 0") and 2.04 meters (6' 8.25"), respectively. Two other freshman in Lilla McMillan and Kayla Quincy won event titles as well, as McMillan ran a 24.32 in the 200 meter dash while Quincy ran 55.99 in the 400 meter dash. Junior Joanna Lapucha cleared a height of 3.81 meters (18' 1") in the pole vault and senior Jon Frano notched a 48.00 finish in the 400 meter dash for the other two Green Wave event titles.

"One of the things we are really stressing right now in our program is we are really trying to get kids to focus less on breaking personal and school records unless the performance is significant to the degree that it elevates them to a potential conference score," said Tulane director of track and field Eric Peterson. "We are really trying to heighten the awareness of being a member of a team, and to not just go out there to better yourself as an individual in your event. We chart from week to week where we stand in the conference. I believe we are improving. We would like to be improving at a faster rate. We are looking at this weekend similarly to our weekend in Arizona (two weeks ago at the Mesa Classic and the Sun Angel Classic). Friday is a great opportunity to compete at the Southeastern Lion Invitational and follow it up with another outstanding meet at the LSU Alumni Gold on Saturday."

With the Conference USA Outdoor Championships just around the corner, the Green Wave track and field program is taking advantage of the two local meets in an attempt to better their standings in the conference before the championships.

"We will run all of our relays on Friday at Southeastern and then all of the athletes will focus on individual events at the LSU Alumni Gold on Saturday," added Peterson. "The most important thing about it is that it simulates a championship meet. We are trying to condition the athletes to be prepared for that, and to get fired up about the physical, emotional and psychological challenges that come with competing in a championship meet."

However, unlike the weekend in Arizona where many athletes competed in their respective events on back-to-back days, Tulane will approach this weekend differently. For example, junior Briana Santiago will triple jump on Friday, but not on Saturday while redshirt sophomore Estefany Cruz will do exactly the opposite. Junior Joanna Lapucha and sophomores Jessica Knierim and Merritt Van Meter will only pole vault on Saturday while freshman Haley Miller will pole vault only on Friday.

"We just don't want to overwork our athletes at this point in time," said Peterson. "There are a lot of members of our team who have competed all outdoor season after competing during a full indoor season. We just want to keep our kids as sharp as possible." Van Meter owns the top jump in the league on the season after clearing 4.11 meters (13' 5.75") at the Sun Angel Classic. At the South Alabama Invitational last weekend, Lapucha and Knierim notched identical 3.81 meters (12' 6") leaps, good for a fifth place tie in the conference.

Breaux, who had a stellar meet at the South Alabama Invitational last weekend, will only compete in the long jump this weekend. On top of that, he will only compete at the LSU Alumni Gold.

"Devon is managing a very heavy workload, as are all of our athletes," added Peterson. "I totally support the need for the training that is required from him to make progress as a football player during the offseason. Coach (Doug) Fraley and I are the ones who are managing the maximization of his health. We just are not going to ask him to do three events."

However, Breaux will join the 4 x 100 meter relay team as the anchor of the quartet, alongside senior Albert Williams and sophomores Xavier Rush and Justyn Shackleford.

"We are excited to have that group run together for the first time," said Peterson. "Coach (Hasani) Roseby has been juggling that lineup, but we like that grouping."

Seniors Candice St. Etienne and Tiffanie Smith notched performances in the 400 meter hurdles at the Stanford Invitational a few weeks ago that placed them in top eight in Conference USA. They will compete on Friday, alongside freshman Jessica Adamson.

Frano is one of the few athletes who will compete in his specialty on both days. He finished the 400 meter dash in 48.00 seconds last weekend for a sixth-place spot in C-USA this year. He'll run in the 400 meter dash on both days, and he'll compete in the 800 meter run at the LSU Alumni Gold.

After running in the 3,000 meter run last weekend, senior Brian Lozes, sophomore Mark Manion and freshman Nicholas Meloro will all compete in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the LSU Alumni Gold. The trio holds the sixth, seventh and eighth spots in the conference in the event, respectively.

Sophomore Thomas Lynch will throw the discus at the Southeastern Lion Invitational. The Washington, D.C., native posted the league's second best discus throw at the Stanford Invitational when he tossed the discus a school-record 51.81 meters (170").
