NEW ORLEANS - With just four weeks remaining before the Conference USA Outdoor Championships, Tulane's track and field program will work on improving their marks in two weeks in Arizona this weekend: the Mesa Classic in Mesa, Ariz. on Friday, and the Sun Angel Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., on Saturday.

"This is a very important weekend for us," said Tulane director of track and field Eric Peterson. "The natural leaders on this team are starting to emerge and develop real consistency in their week-to-week performances. We are really counting on those athletes to continue that. The opportunity to compete both here at Mesa College and then at Arizona State allows us to use this weekend to simulate the situations and circumstances that our kids will face at the Conference USA Championships. Almost everyone we brought will be competing on both Friday and Saturday, simulating the qualifying round and the final round. That is the kind of thing that they will have to manage during a championship event, and this is the perfect setting to do that."

The team originally intended to just compete in the Sun Angel Invitational, but when Peterson found out that most of the events his team would compete in would be held on Saturday, he entered the team in the Mesa Classic for Friday.

"Fortunately our preparation did not change at all," said Peterson. "What it does is allow us to take a day away from practice earlier in the week because we know we are going to be putting them into competition for two days rather than just one. The nice thing about it is that we had already scheduled our travel plans to arrive on Thursday, so we are now able to utilize Friday to compete rather than just train. It's a real added benefit. Once we learned about the meet at Mesa College, we wanted to take advantage of it."

With the two meets this weekend, the Green Wave athletes will be able to build upon some of their record setting performances this season. Sophomore pole vaulter Merritt Van Meter set the outdoor record in the pole vault just last week when she cleared 3.98 meters (13' 0.75") at the Stanford Invitational. It was her first outdoor meet as a member of the Tulane track and field program, as she missed earlier meets this season due to her extended indoor season in which she competed in the NCAA Indoor Championships. She will compete only in the Sun Angel Invitational on Saturday.

Also set last week was the men's discus record, when sophomore Thomas Lynch had a throw of 51.81 meters (170' 0") at the Stanford Invitational. He broke his own record that he set earlier this year when he posted a throw of 50.60 meters (166' 0") at the Bob Hayes Cowboy Relays. The Washington, D.C., native will have two chances to better his mark, as he will compete in both meets this weekend.

Joining Van Meter in the pole vault in the Sun Angel Invitational are the second and third best placeholders in school history in junior Joanna Lapucha and sophomore Jessica Knierim. Lapucha has a top jump of 3.66 meters (12' 0") this season, while Knierim has a jump of 3.76 meters (12' 4") - third in school history. Lapucha set the second best mark in school history, which at the time was first overall, with a jump of 3.80 meters (12' 5.5") last season. Lapucha and Knierim will also compete in the Mesa Classic.

"Merritt is obviously an elite, national level pole vaulter," said Peterson. "But Joanna and Jessica are emerging. What they want to do is get after that 13 foot bar and really try to establish consistence performances. That is really priority number one for them. We don't want them to just jump well, but we want them to jump well on a consistent basis."

In just his first collegiate track and field meet, freshman Devon Breaux notched the seventh best long jump in school history when he leapt 7.10 meters (23' 3.5"). He will compete in the long jump during both meets.

Star freshman Tamika Brazzel will compete in the long jump again after notching the eighth best jump in school history in the event just last week when she posted a leap of 5.88 meters (19' 3.25"). She will compete in the event on both days, and sophomore Estefany Cruz will join her on Friday. On Saturday, however, Cruz will take part in the triple jump with junior Briana Santiago.

"Tamika is really starting to put her technique and rhythm together," said Peterson. "That is why she is focusing on the long jump this weekend rather than branching out into the triple jump. Estefany had an outstanding mark at the Stanford Invitational last week, and I know she is looking to build on that."

In just his first season, freshman Adam Yohanan has already made his mark in the Tulane record books as he ran the tenth best 800 meter run when he ran the event in 1:56.74 at the LSU Relays just a few weeks ago. He will compete in the event during both meets this weekend.

Senior Max Yanker notched the fourth best high jump in school history earlier this season when he cleared 2.06 meters (6' 9") at the Tulane Team Challenge in early March. The Rye, N.Y., native will compete in the Sun Angel Invitational only.

"Max is ranked in the top 35 in the east region, and he is jumping very well," said Peterson. "He has been consistent, and we look for him to continue that."
