April 4, 2001
NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University will host the Tulane Invitational Outdoor Track meet Saturday at Tad Gormley Stadium in City Park as part of its "2001 Spring Fling". The 13-team event will open at 9 a.m. with the women's discus throw and the men's shot put. Admission is free until 2 p.m.
Following the track meet, the Tulane football team will host its annual "Green & White" Spring Football Game. Kickoff is slated for approximately 4 p.m.
The Green Wave track team will be led by a pair of NCAA Championship automatic qualifiers. Junior Solomon Kandie (Nairobi, Kenya) set the school record in 3,000-meter steeplechase last weekend in Stanford. His time of 8:39.21 automatically qualifies him for the NCAA Championships in May and it is also the top time in the nation this year in that event. The Steeplechase will begin at 11:30 a.m.
In addition, junior Nathan Junius (New Orleans, La.) has automatically qualified for the NCAAs in the javelin. The junior's top throw of 239 feet, three inches is the third-best mark in the country this season. On Saturday, the men's javelin throw will begin at 1:30 p.m.
In addition to Tulane, the following teams will be participating: Haverford (Pa.), Iowa (women only), LSU, McNeese State, Memphis, New Orleans, Nicholls State, Northwestern State (La.), Southeastern Louisiana, Southern Miss, Xavier (New Orleans) and Xavier (Ohio).
While the morning and early afternoon track and field action is free, a ticket will be required for admission to the Stadium beginning at 2 p.m. Tickets for the Green & White Scrimmage are $7 for adults and $5 for children and all tickets are also good for free admission to the Kids Carnival area in City Park. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster outlets, at the Tulane Athletics Ticket Office or by calling 504-861-WAVE.
