Jelena Jurlina Earns Co-Athlete of the Week Honors for Tulane Track
April 1, 2003 NEW ORLEANS, La. - Sophomore Jelena Jurlina of Tulane University has been named the Women's Outdoor Track Co-Athlete of the Week for Conference USA, it was announced on Tuesday. Jurlina recorded a pair of regional qualifying marks on Saturday at the prestigious Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla. The sophomore finished second in the javelin with a throw of 152-01, while placing eighth in the discus with her effort of 154 feet even. The Croatia native set the Tulane record in the discus as a freshman with a throw of 162 feet, five inches at the Tulane Invitational. Jurlina was not the only strong performance for the Green Wave at the Florida Relays. Freshman Lindsey Karlik, who already held the school's indoor record in the pole vault, set the outdoor record in the first outdoor meet of her career. She cleared 11 feet, four and a quarter inches. In addition, sophomore Moji Alade had a personal-best effort in the discus with a throw of 141 feet, three inches. The other Athlete of the Week winner was Cincinnati sophomore Jo Young who set a Bearcat school record in the shot put at the Florida Relays with an NCAA regional qualifying throw of 46 feet, one and a quarter inches.
Tulane is back in action on Saturday, competing at the Yellow Jacket Invitational at Georgia Tech.
