Katrina Gemmell has been one of the top distance runners for the Green Wave through her career. She is Tulane's top performer in the 1,500 and the mile.
Most Memorable Experience with Athletics: The first time I represented my country. When I was 15, I went to the Oceania Championships and I managed to win a title there [800, Under-18 Division]. My other most memorable moment would have to be my freshman year here at Tulane when we went to the Nationals and we came in third in the DMR [distance medley relay] and were All-Americans.
Being a Tulane student-athlete helped or changed me by: I think I have grown up a lot. It is very hard trying to balance your school work and trying to run well. My experiences here have been an amazing thing for me. It has been a great opportunity to live here and experience a different culture. I know I would not have had this if I was still back in New Zealand. I am really thankful that this opportunity came up, it has been the best thing that has ever happened to me.
Major: Exercise science. All through my life I have been a sports fanatic. I chose it because I was interested in it, but I did not really know if I would use it as a career option, but I have really enjoyed it.
Plans after Graduation: That's a good question! I think I want to stay in the States for as long as I can. I will use my visa and look for some work.
Favorite Book: It would have to be Bridget Jones's Diary [by Helen Fielding]. I really loved the movie and I got the book and it is equally as good.
Favorite On-Campus Activities: I just love hanging out with friends and relaxing because you find being a student-athlete, you do not have much free time, so when you get some, it is just great to relax, eat good food and just hang out with friends.
If I could play another sport at Tulane, it would be: I would probably want to give tennis a go. I am not very good at it, but I really like it.
I Chose Tulane Because: Basically, they [the Tulane coaching staff] persisted on getting me here so much. I had a few other options from other schools, but they did not really persist and Tulane persisted for many months.
Personal Philosophy: In the past year, I have picked up a philosophy to live every day as it comes and not to look to much in the future.
People who influenced athletic career: My father. He always says that he is my number one fan and he is always behind me and always believes in me. He has been my support when things have been down and he has been the one that I have always been able to go to.
Favorite TV Show: Friends.
Actor you would most like to see in a movie: Al Pacino and Julia Roberts.
Favorite Food: I love Mexican burritos. And I love when my dad makes me a big steak sandwich in the barbecue back home.
People I would like to thank: I would like to thank Coach Bazil. He has been great, he has been amazing. He has been sort of like a father figure for me here. Also my boyfriend Victor, who is on the tennis team here, who has been a great influence on me. And also all of the other friends that I have made here.
Biggest difference between New Zealand and the United States: The culture and the people in general.....the food, just everything is really different. Life over here is really crazy. Back home it is more relaxed. I like things about both places, but I really like New Zealand much better, I think because that is what I grew up with.
