NEW ORLEANS - In just the second outdoor meet of the season, the Tulane outdoor track and field program will stay in state, heading to Lake Charles for the Bob Hayes Cowboy Relays on Saturday, hosted by McNeese State.
Both the men's and women's teams will compete with a slew of programs from around the area. Nicholls State, Northwestern State, Southeastern Louisiana, Dillard, Grambling, Southern, Louisiana-Monroe, Xavier and the host program are all squads from Louisiana that will take to the McNeese State/Cameron Communications Track Complex this weekend. Southern Miss, Mississippi Valley State and Jackson State will be competing, as well.
After hosting the Tulane Team Challenge last weekend, the Tulane squad will take to the road for the remainder of the season.
"We want to build upon what we did at the Tulane Team Challenge last weekend," said Tulane director of track and field Eric Peterson. "You'll notice that a lot of the women that had a heavy indoor track and field schedule will not be competing this week, but our full men's team and a lot of the women who did not participate heavily during the indoor season will compete this weekend and build upon what they did last week."
"Our kids are really going to be focusing this weekend on whether or not they are ready to go on the road to compete in meets like the Stanford Invitational," added Peterson.
Sophomore Tiffany Kenney will look to build upon her personal best in long jump that she set last weekend. The Colorado Springs, Colo., native cleared 5.49 meters (18-0.25) in the long jump last week, and she also threw the shot put 9.60 meters (31-6).
Freshman discus thrower Cheyenne Swanson threw the eighth longest discus throw in school history last week - her first meet as a collegiate athlete. She cleared 34.30 (112-6), and she will compete again on Saturday.
On the men's side, senior Max Yanker bested his career performance in the high jump last week, clearing 2.06 meters (6-9). That mark is good enough for fourth place in the Tulane history books. Sophomore Thomas Lynch posted the fourth best discus throw in Tulane outdoor history last weekend, tossing the discus 46.02 meters (151-0). Both Yanker and Lynch will take to their respective events on Saturday.
Both the men and women will compete in a slew of relays this weekend, combining for five relay events. The women will send Kenney, freshman Dana Ohlson, freshman Taylor Caulk and junior Charlotte Manogue to compete in the 4 x 200 meter relay, while sophomore Michelle Kreutzberg, Manogue, freshman Amanda Savage and senior Emmi Aguillard will take part in the 4 x 800 meter relay.
The men will compete in the 4 x 100 meter relay, the 4 x 400 meter relay - where two teams of Tulane athletes will compete - and the 4 x 800 meter relay. They will also take part in the
"Obviously, on the track this weekend, we are going to focus on the relay events that this meet is providing," said Peterson.
