Track Posts Strong Effort at Meyo Classic

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Tulane track and field team posted its best overall performance this season, as the squad posted two NCAA provisional qualifying times and six top-five finishes at the Meyo Classic Saturday in South Bend, Ind.

Freshman Solomon Kandie led the team's effort, finishing third in the Meyo Mile with a time of 4:40.88. The time was a season best for the Nairobi, Kenya, native, and was a Tulane season best as well.

Also posting an NCAA provisional qualifier was the Green Wave women's Distance Medley Relay team. The quartet finished second with a time of 11:40.03, which was also a season best.

The women's 4x400-yard relay team set a Meyo Classic record by winning its event with a time of 3:41.76, while the men's 4x400-yard relay team finished second with a time of 3:12.84.

Several Green Wave student-athletes also registered solid individual efforts, as two women's team members posted top-four finishes. Lana Garner finished fourth in the women's 400-meter dash with a season-best time of 54.77 seconds. Hanna Ritakallio finished fourth in the women's mile run with a time of 4:52.19. It was her best mark of the year.

Katrina Gemmell posted her season-best time with a ninth-place finish in the women's 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.37, while Peter Rotich also posted a personal best this season with a time of 8:35.2 in the men's 3,000-meter run.

Tulane will next be in action on Feb. 11-12 at the Cannon IV Classic in Indianapolis, Ind.
