NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane track and field program will return to the indoor oval this weekend after training for the past two weeks. The Green Wave heads to the 37th Annual Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Neb. to compete in the two day event which starts on Friday, February 3 and concludes on Saturday February 4.
The Green Wave enter the weekend ranked 15th in the USTFCCCA NCAA Division I Regional Index for week two, after ranking 13th in the initial poll. Sixteen members of the Tulane roster will make the trip to the Bob Devaney Sports Center on the University of Nebraska campus. Tiffany Kenney will participate in the first Tulane pentathlon since 2010, seven members of the team will compete in field events and eight will take to the track for running events.
After competing in multiple events during the first three competitions, freshman Tiffany Kenney will participate in the Green Wave's first pentathlon since February 26, 2010. The rookie will take part in the multi-event competition that features a pair of running and three field events. The competition kicks off the meet at 12:30 on Friday, with the 60-metr hurdles, followed by the high jump, shot put, long jump and 800 meter.
The triple jump has been a solid event for the Olive and Blue this season, with Estefany Cruz and Briana Santiago each ranking among the to-ten in Conference USA. Cruz ranks second in C-USA and 28th nationally with a season-best leap of 12.45-meters, while Santiago sits seventh overall in the conference with a 2011-best mark of 11.85-meters last weekend at the Cherry and Silver Invitational.
Adiyah Crute and Hilary Woods are the only two Green Wave student-athletes to compete in multiple individual events over the weekend. Crute will see her first action of the 2012 calendar year when she competes in the 60-meter hurdle and 200 meter prelims on Friday evening. Woods will look to continue her steady improvement when she runs the 200-meter dash, setting a personal best at the Cherry and Silver Invitational in her last outing, and will run the 60 meter for the first time this winter.
After competing in just a handful of meets last season, Jamie Riles is enjoying a fine season on the oval. The junior currently ranks among the Conference USA leaders in the 200 and 400-meter events, entering the weekend ranks fourth in the 400 meter with a season-best time of 55.77-seconds.
Candice St. Etienne will also compete in the 400 meter and enters the weekend ranking among the conference's elite in a pair of events. The junior sits ninth in the 400 meter with a season and career-best time of 57.34 - which is second on the team - that was set at the Crimson Indoor Opener on January 14. She is also among the top 800 meter runners in C-USA with a mark of 2:16.95.
Freshman distance runner Paige Callahan will see her first collegiate atmosphere on the track this weekend as a member of the 5000 meter field. The rookie was named the Louisiana Runner of the Year in cross country after leading all state runners at the NCAA South Central Regional.
