NEW ORLEANS - For the second time on the season, Tulane's track and field team will head to Albuquerque, N.M., to compete - this time in the New Mexico Classic.
The Green Wave will compete in only jumping events, just one week after Tulane sent only runners to the UW Invitational in Seattle, Wash. Tulane is returning to a venue in which they are familiar - the Albuquerque Convention Center - after competing there just two weeks ago in the Cherry and Silver Invitational.
"Every kid we are taking out there has had two weeks of preparation, and that is really important during this time of the year," stated Tulane track and field head coach Eric Peterson. "This is a critical time in our season. The last weekend of January to the middle part of February is the time where everyone in the country is really going strong. This is a really good venue for our jumpers to be competing, and that is why we are going back."
Sophomore Merritt Van Meter looks to return to action in the pole vault after a week off. The Metairie, La., native has won two individual event titles on the season, and she cleared 3.95 meters (12' 11½") when she last competed during the Cherry and Silver Invitational. She broke the school record in early December with a jump of 4.00m (13' 1½"). Junior Joanna Lapucha and sophomore Jessica Knierim will also compete in the pole vault after posting career highs of 3.80m (12' 5¾") and 3.65m (11' 11¾"), respectively, during the Cherry and Silver Invitational.
"These pole vaulters have been making significant progress during practice," added Peterson.
Redshirt sophomore Estefany Cruz and junior Briana Santiago will look to top their performances of two weeks ago in the triple jump, when they placed second and fourth with jumps of 12.49m (40' 11¾") and 12.17m (39' 11¼").
Kenney and Ohlson will round out the competition for the Green Wave by participating in both the long jump and the 60 meter high hurdles.
"All of these athletes have been training well, and there is an opportunity for each one of them to go out and perform very well and continue the level of improvement they've been enjoying," said Peterson.
