NEW ORLEANS - A small group of Tulane runners will head to the Pacific Northwest this weekend to compete in the UW Invitational at the Dempsey Center, hosted by the University of Washington.
After a weekend in which both runners and jumpers competed at the Cherry and Silver Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., Tulane head coach Eric Peterson will take some of his sprinters and middle distance runners to compete in one of the top venues in the nation.
"We are going up to the Dempsey Center in Seattle because it has been the site of some of the finest middle and long distance races that have been produced over the past few years in indoor track and field," said Peterson. "It's a great opportunity for our kids to run in a great facility against really strong competition."
Sophomore Paige Callahan will make her season debut in an event that Tulane has yet to compete in this season - the 5,000 meter run. The Annapolis, Md., native held the team's top time for the 5,000 meter run last year with a time of 18:39.46. She was the top performer for the Tulane Cross Country program this past fall.
"For all intents and purposes, Paige is running her first indoor race in her life where she is strong and healthy," added Peterson. "I'm really excited about her opening things up on Friday night after having such a strong cross country season. She led our team in every race."
Sophomore Hilary Woods and freshman Lilla McMillan will get the event started for the Green Wave by running in the 200 meter dash on Friday. McMillan holds the two top performances in the event on the season for Tulane, with her best time of 24.86 seconds coming in the Panther Ice Breaker. Woods top time on the year - also coming during the Panther Ice Breaker - is 25.61 seconds.
"Lilla has a very bright future," said Peterson. "Right now, at this point in her career, the 200 meter dash is her best event. Both she and Hilary will be tested this weekend."
The bulk of the action comes on Saturday, where Tulane will participate in three events. A seasoned veteran in senior Tiffanie Smith and a new face in freshman Kayla Quincy will look to better their times in the 400 meter dash. During the UAB Blazer Indoor Invitational on Jan. 11, Smith and Quincy ran the 400 meter dash in 58.44 and 58.56 seconds, respectively. Those two times happen to be the top two marks in the event on the season for the Green Wave.
Kelci Lyons, a sophomore from Breaux Bridge, La., has competed in the 800 meters three times on the season, which leads the Green Wave. She will make it four this weekend, when she and freshman Jessica Adamson take to the track in the event. Adamson is coming off a weekend in which she competed in the odd 600 meter race.
Tulane will compete in the 4 x 400 meter relay for the first time in two weeks, when Candice St. Etienne, Quincy, Woods and Tiffanie Smith team up to pass the baton. The top time in the event on the season was run by three of this weekend's grouping - Quincy, Woods and Smith - along with Adamson back in December when the squad posted a 3:48.44 finish.
This weekend's journey will mark the first of two trips the Green Wave squad will make to the Emerald City this year. Tulane will send athletes to compete in the Husky Invitational on Feb. 8-9.
