JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Looking to secure her second trip to an NCAA Championship this season, Estefany Cruz came up just short of advancing to the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The rookie posted her fifth best leap of the season to finish among the top-50 jumpers in the nation in the event.
The Guatemala City native posted her top jump of the competition in her first leap of the afternoon at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla. Cruz leapt 12.48-meters when she took to the runway as a member of the third flight of jumpers. She was unable to match her jump the rest of the afternoon, marking at 12.19-meters on her second attempt and fouling on her final attempt of the prelims.
On the year, Cruz owns the top seven jumps in the event and finished second at the Conference USA Outdoor and Indoor Championships. Her first season on the track for Tulane was a successful one as she earned Honorable Mention All-America honors during the indoor campaign. She posted a season-best leap of 12.83-meters at the C-USA Championships during the outdoor campaign and a jump of 13.03-meters at the indoor conference championships.
One Green Wave competitor advanced to the NCAA Outdoor National Championships over the weekend when Ana Ruzevic claimed an eighth place finish at the East Regional. Ruzevic will compete on the opening day of the event, throwing at 2:40 Central time in Des Moines, Iowa.
