Tulane Women Win C-USA Outdoor Track Championship

TAMPA, Fla. - Tulane University won its second Conference USA Women's Outdoor Track Championship in three years on Saturday at the University of South Florida. The Green Wave had six first-place finishes in the meet. Tulane, with 145 points, edged Houston (135 points) and South Florida (122) for the title. The Wave men took eighth place with 79 points. The men's championship was won by Cincinnati (104 points) followed closely by Memphis (103) and Houston (98). Tulane Coach Ron Bazil was named the Women's Coach of the Year. Sophomore Nadja Petersen (Stockholm, Sweden) was Tulane's top women's performer, winning the 400 Intermediate Hurdles and the 400-Meter Dash. She also was part of the Green Wave's winning 4x400 Relay team. For the Wave men, junior Solomon Kandie (Nairobi, Kenya) repeated as the C-USA Athlete of the Year. Kandie won the 3,000-Meter Steeplechase and the 5,000-Meter Run, while finishing second in the 1,500 meters, matching his performances from last year. Junior Katrina Gemmell (Palmerston North, New Zealand) also had an excellent meet for the Wave. She won the 1,500-Meter Run and took third in the 800 and eighth in the 5,000 to collect 17 points. Senior Nikelola Balogun (Los Angeles, Calif.) earned second place with a provisional qualifying time in the 400 and also took fourth in the 200-Meter Dash.
Junior Asha James (Pickering, Ontario) was third in the 200 and fifth in the 100. Other strong finishers for the Wave women included senior Angela Milner (Modesto, Calif.) and sophomore Marie Ahlander (Arsta, Sweden). Milner finished second in the 800, while Ahlander was second in the Triple Jump, she was also second in the Long Jump on Friday.
For the Green Wave men, junior Clement Abai (Port Moresby, New Guinea) was the winner in the 800-Meter Run. Junior Nathan Junius (New Orleans, La.) won the Javelin Throw and senior Noel Comrie (St. Elizabeth, Jamaica) won the Triple Jump. Tulane's winners from Thursday were sophomore Jenny Isgren (Rydsgord, Sweden) in the High Jump and junior Catherine Betz (Metairie, La.) in the Javelin Throw. The Green Wave also won the women's championship in 1999, while finishing in second last year.
