Track Opens Competition at Penn Relay Carnival

PHILADELPHIA - Bolstered by strong relay performances, the Tulane track and field team opened competition Thursday at the historic Penn Relay Carnival and posted a number of strong performances, including three season-best efforts and two top-five finishes.

The 4x400-meter relay team registered Tulanes best finish of the day, as the lineup of Angela Milner, Charlotte Plummer, Quasheba Lee and Lana Garner finished fourth. The Wave posted a time of 3:39.76.

The Green Wave womens 4x800-meter relay team also posted a season-best time of 8:33.97 to finish fifth. The quartet of Katrina Gemmell, Alison Lambert, Garner and Hanne Lyngstad shaved nearly five and a half seconds off their previous best effort.

Tulane's 4x100-meter relay team of Asha James, Rebecca Murphy, Lee and Nadia Smith ran a season-best time of 46.48 in its event, but did not advance to the finals.

Plummer, a junior from Markham, Ontario, also ran a season-best time of 59.74 to finish 13th in the 400-meter hurdles. Her time was just 34 one-hundredths of a second shy of an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

Freshman Catherine Betz, a native of Metairie, La., finished seventh in the javelin with a mark of 136-feet, 1-inch. She was one of 14 competitors in the event.

Smith, a senior from Wellington, New Zealand, also finished eighth in the high jump with a mark of 5-feet, 6-inches. It was Tulanes fourth top-10 finish of the day.

The 105th running of the Penn Relay Carnival continues Friday and Saturday, April 23-24. The event is hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.
