SAN DIEGO - The Tulane track and field program opened their 2012 outdoor campaign on Friday, March 16 evening whit the completion of the heptathlon and decathlon, along with the open events at the Aztec Invitational. The event is being hosted by San Diego State University at the SDSU Sports Deck and saw eight women's and two men's players set personal bests and one school record.

The men's squad produced the top two finishes of the evening when Max Miller won the 5000 meter and Jon Frano claimed a runner-up spot in the 800 meter. Miller pulled away from the field in in the 5000 meter and cruised to victory by nearly 20 seconds. The senior also set a new career-best in the event by nearly one full minute. Miller entered with a personal-best time of 16:42.68, which he set as a sophomore, but covered the twelve and one-half laps in 15:49.40 to outdistance the field.

Frano was venturing into new territory in the first meet of 2012 when he competed in the 800 meter event for the first time as a collegiate. The junior finished second in his heat of the event and that time stood up as the second best time in the 16-person field and the ninth best time in Tulane history. His mark of 1:54.40 is the fastest time for a Tulane runner over the past two seasons.

For the second time in as many competitions, sophomore Joanna Lapucha set the school record in the pole vault. After claiming the indoor record on the runway at the Conference USA championships, Lapucha used only five jumps to clear six heights in the 30-person field at the Aztec Invitational. The Lafayette, La. product passed the first three heights of the competition, cleared 3.27-meters on her second attempt and 3.42 on her first attempts. After missing at the 3.57-meter bar her first approach, Lapucha soared over the bar to set the Tulane outdoor record.

It was a great start to the outdoor season for Hilary Woods, who posted a pair of top-ten finishes and set personal bests at both the 200 and 400-meter distances. Woods covered the 200-meter distance in 24.71 and shaved over a half-second off of her previous best from 2011 to finish third in the event. In the 400 meter, the sophomore ran a full second under her previous best to finish sixth overall with a 56.60 showing. Candice St. Etienne also had a solid showing at the 400-meter distance, crossing the finish line in 56.62 to grab a personal best time and a seventh place finish in the 22-person field.

Ana Ruzevic began her senior campaign with a runner-up finish in the javelin after placing fourth at the NCAA National Championships in 2011. Ruzevic uncorked a toss of 48.66 to place second in the field of 17 competitors. It is the sixth time in her career that Ruzevic has topped the 48-meter mark in the event that she holds the Tulane school record in.
