Track and Field Teams Open Outdoor Seasons

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Tulane University track and field teams opened the 2001 outdoor season at the Southern Miss Invitational at the Southern Miss Track and Field and Soccer Complex on Saturday. Junior Nathan Junius (New Orleans, La.) was the top standout for the Green Wave. He won the javelin with a throw of 234-02, which surpasses the NCAA Provisional Qualifying standard. Junius also finished second in the discus throw. Junior Solomon Kandie (Nairobi, Kenya) also had an excellent day, finishing second in both the 1,500-meter run and the 5,000-meter run. The top performers for the Green Wave women were juniors Katrina Gemmell (Plamerston North, New Zealand) and Catherine Betz (Metarie, La.). Gemmell won the 800-meter run in a time of 2:15.25 and also finished second in the 3,000 metersBetz had the top throw in the javelin at 151-07, while taking fourth in the discus throw. The Green Wave is back in action next weekend at the Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa.
