BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - It wasn't a day full of highlights for the Tulane track and field program on the opening session of the 2012 Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships, but Joanna Lapucha stamped her name into Green Wave history with a school record performance in the pole vault.
Lapucha passed the first two heights of the pole vault competition and made her first attempt at both the 3.36 and 3.51-meter marks. After missing on her initial attempt at 3.66-meters, the sophomore vaulted over of the bar on her second attempt to break Lindsey Karklin's record which was set in 2003. Lapucha's previous career-best was 3.40-meters - set earlier this season - and she tied for fifth at the C-USA Championships.
Jamie Riles had a pair of solid performances on the opening day of competition, but was unable to escape the prelims of the 200 or 400 meter events. The junior took the top spot in heat three of the 400 meter, running 56.64 over the distance. It was the fifth time in 2012 that she broke the tape in under 57-seconds and was her fourth fastest time of the season. She covered the 200-meter oval in 24.34 to place ninth overall in the prelims of the event. It was her third fastest time of the season and she missed qualifying for the finals by 11-tenths of a second.
In the 800 meter, Candice St. Etienne claimed a 14th place overall finish in the prelims of the event, running 2:16.49. It was her third fastest time of 2012 and was good for fifth place in her heat. Charlotte Manogue also competed for the Green Wave and set a personal record with a time of 2:26.16.
The C-USA Championships will continue tomorrow morning and Tulane will have a handful of performers on the docket. Estefany Cruz will enter the triple jump as the top seed, while Briana Santiago looks to compete for scoring position, entering as with the ninth best mark in 2012. On top of the 4x400-meter relay, a trio of performers will compete in the high jump and Johanna Gretschel will compete in the mile, to highlight a few competitors.
