SEATTLE - Tulane's Paige Callahan turned in the best performance in indoor school history during the 5,000 meter race at the UW Invitational at the Dempsey Center in Seattle, Wash, by posting a time of 16:59.70.

Her time today was good enough for seventh place in the event.

Callahan broke the previous school indoor record of 17:05.31, notched by Aubrey Phillips in February 2008. Callahan's mark is the first sub-17 minute mark in the history of the event during the indoor season by a Tulane athlete. Taking into consideration both the indoor and outdoor school records, it is the second best time by at Tulane athlete in the event all-time. Hanne Lyngstad's outdoor mark of 16:30.47 - set in 1998 - is the only time eclipsing Callahan's superb performance in Tulane history.

"For her to come out and run as aggressively as she did today and produce the result she did this early in the season is very impressive," stated Tulane track and field head coach Eric Peterson. "It sets her up to have a really excellent season."

Callahan - taking part in her first meet of 2013 - only participated in two indoor meets during her freshman year, running in the 5,000 meter event once and posting the team's best time of 18:39.46. She prepared for this year's indoor season by competing in all six of Tulane's cross country meets this past fall.

"I'm really excited for Paige, although I am not surprised by her performance after coming off such a strong cross country season in the fall," added Peterson. "She's healthy and she is training well, and she just got her indoor season started off in really good fashion."

Tulane entered two participants in the 200 meter dash - the only other event the Green Wave participated in on the evening. Freshman Lilla McMillan placed ninth in the event with a time of 25.18, which is tied for the third best performance by a Greenie on the season. The freshman from Mill Valley, Calif., has placed in the top ten in the event twice this year, and her third performance during the Crimson Tide Opener earlier this month was good for 11th place. Junior Hilary Woods placed 15th in the 200 meter dash by finishing in 25.40. The mark is a new season high for the junior from New Orleans. It is the highest she has placed in the event on the season.

"The most important thing for Lilla and Hilary is that they are gaining valuable experience," said Peterson. "The purpose of this meet was for us to see where all of our athletes will be strongest."

Tomorrow, the Greenies will compete in three events, with Woods running in the 60 meter dash, Tiffanie Smith and Kayla Quincy running in the 400 meter dash, Kelci Lyons and Jessica Adamson taking part in the 800 meter run and Candice St. Etienne, Quincy, Woods and Smith teaming up for the 4 x 400 meter relay.
