BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Despite participating in a variety of off-events, the Tulane track and field team posted respectable numbers at the UAB Blazer Indoor Invitational today - including freshman Tamika Brazzel's first place finish in the triple jump.

Overall, there were eight top 15 finishes by the Green Wave including two from senior Tiffanie Smith for her performances in the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash.

"We had a mixed bag of performances, kind of what you would expect coming off the holiday break," said Tulane assistant track and field coach Doug Fraley. "We had some good, some average and some below average performances, but Tamika (Brazzel) and Tiffanie (Smith) really stood out today."

In the triple jump - one of the final events on the day - Brazzel jumped 12.51 meters (41' 0½). Her mark broke the meet's previous record of 12.35 meters (40' 6¼") that was held by Michelle Ogashi of Southeastern Louisiana. The freshman from Oceanside, Calif. did not take long to leave her stamp in Tulane's record book. Her performance in the triple jump is the sixth best mark in Tulane history.

"Tamika's jump was really outstanding," said Fraley. "She beat some very good athletes in her field. The thing that I was pleased about was the consistency she had. All five of her best jumps were over the 12 meter mark. As a freshman, I didn't want her to be overwhelmed with the competition tomorrow (at the Crimson Tide Invitational), but she wound up winning the whole thing today."

Smith notched a new career high in the 400-meter dash, finishing in 12th place with a time of 58.44. Freshman Kayla Quincy (13th place, 58.56) and sophomore Kelci Lyons (35th, 1:00.17) also made their 400-meter dash debuts for the Green Wave.

Later in the day, Smith nearly surpassed her career best mark of 25.08 during the 200-meter dash by finishing with a time of 25.18. Her mark was good enough for 13th place on the day.

"She (Smith) has done a really good job this year in becoming a team leader vocally and in the weight room, and that kind of carried over onto the track today," said Fraley. "I am excited for her to finally see some results from all of her leadership."

Competing in only her second event as a collegiate athlete, freshman Jill Doyle placed fourth in the pole vault by clearing 3.35 meters (10' 11¾"), while teammate and fellow freshman Haley Miller placed ninth after clearing 3.05 meters (10' 0"). Both were competing for the second time this season, but both are sure to see more action as the season rolls along.

Kreutzberg - who has only competed in the 400-meter dash during her indoor career at Tulane - placed ninth in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:22.19. The Scottsdale, Ariz. native did compete in the 800-meter race during the 2012 outdoor season, ranking third on the team with a 2:23.60 finish last April. Oddly enough, that meet- the South Alabama Invitational - was also held in Alabama.

Coming off a season in which she competed in the NCAA National Championships, redshirt sophomore Estefany Cruz tied her career high of 5.47 meters (17' 11½") in the long jump. She placed 14th on the day with her leap.

Freshman Mikayla Sonneborn started the meet off for the Green Wave by competing in her first event as a collegiate athlete. She ran the one mile in 5:33.11, placing 26th on the day.

Tulane had entries in 11 of the 13 events. The shot put and 3000-meter race were the only two events lacking a Tulane participant.

Tulane's track and field team won't travel far for their next event, as they compete in the Crimson Tide Indoor Open tomorrow at the Birmingham Crossplex.
