Hurricane Katrina taught all of us in New Orleans important lessons about life. One lesson that many of us at Tulane University quickly learned was that it is not enough to put yourself back on your feet - you have to lift up those around you. And so Tulane's university-wide commitment to public service was born.
In the case of our student-athletes, there is a natural fit between the leadership skills they develop day in and day out and their innate ability to positively influence the youth of New Orleans - those in need of guidance or a helping hand.
Thanks to the generosity of Kate and Bob Devlin, longtime supporters of Tulane athletics, we have established a center devoted to the expansion of the role of our student-athletes in the New Orleans community. The Devlin Student-Athletes for Education Center for Leadership Development will help our student-athletes make an even greater impact on our community by developing new associations and relationships with schools and nonprofit organizations. The S-AFE Center incorporates the principals of philanthropic service and leadership into the student-athlete experience and enhances the Tulane athletics department's outreach efforts with coordinated planning, training and oversight.
You couldn't ask for a better city in which to implement a program like this, and you couldn't ask for better student-athletes than we have here at Tulane. They are terrific individuals and thanks to the S-AFE Center, they will serve as an inspiration to the youth of New Orleans for years to come.
Dear Tulane University and New Orleans Advocate,
Tulane Athletics and the Kate and Bob Devlin S-AFE Center are pleased to offer alumni, fans, and friends across the country an opportunity to support Green Wave Athletics along with the community it serves. This partnership is made possible by a joint venture between the Devlin S-AFE (Student-Athletes for Education) Center for Leadership Development and the Tulane Athletics Fund (TAF). The S-AFE Center "Youth Ticket Initiative" provides tickets to Green Wave contests to the youth of New Orleans and across the state of Louisiana through a partnership with local public elementary schools, youth groups and non-profit organizations.
Here's how it works: supporters make a donation to TAF and the value of that gift is applied to the youth ticket initiative. Fans will receive credit for a tax-deductible donation along with TAF benefits; Tulane Athletics will receive important financial support; and, most importantly, at-risk youth of New Orleans and across the state of Louisiana will be provided tickets to Green Wave athletic events and opportunities to participate in other outreach programs. Through the generosity of donors and corporate sponsors here in New Orleans and across the country we have thousands of tickets available for every home football game. In addition, we also have an inventory for all other men's and women's basketball, volleyball, and baseball games. S-AFE Center Youth Ticket Initiative packages are available at a variety of levels. For more information, or to sign-up today, contact Jason Potuto at firstname.lastname@example.org or 504-314-7215.
The S-AFE Center is involved in numerous community projects and is developing new programming opportunities to ensure that every Tulane student-athlete participates in a personally meaningful volunteer and outreach during their time at Tulane. Youth are brought on campus throughout the school year to interact with our student athletes at events such as Wave Days and "Shadow-a-Student Athlete Day", which exposes the youth to the concept of higher education and the college experience. A crucial component of this program is to provide tickets so that they can attend a game on campus or at the Superdome and interact with Tulane student-athletes in the collegiate environment.
This program is a homerun for everyone involved. It benefits the youth of New Orleans, Tulane Athletics, and you! Thank you for your generosity and I look forward to partnering with you while we positively impact the lives of young people in the greater New Orleans community.
