Tulane Baseball Rolls in ECU Series Opener
Apr 22, 2022 | Baseball
The Green Wave offense exploded on Friday, scoring ten runs in the first four innings against last season's AAC regular season champions.
With the win, Tulane and ECU are now tied atop the AAC standings with matching 7-3 conference records.
"We had a good start, played good defense, and were timely offensively," head coach Travis Jewett said. "All-in-all, a lot of good stuff today."
Shortstop Trevor Minder had two hits and a career-high five RBI, powering the Green Wave offense.
"We just stuck to our plan and got it done," Minder said. "I just need to stay in the zone and swing at the pitches I want to swing at. There were people on base all day, which was the real key to my success today."
Sophomore Dylan Carmouche took the hill for the Wave and allowed four earned runs while striking out four over seven innings of work.
Junior Ryder Giles got his sixth start of the season and gave up four earned runs on four hits over 2.2 innings of work.
Sophomore Chase Engelhard led off the bottom of the second with a triple down the right field line, his first of the season. Trevor Minder then lifted a sacrifice fly to the warning track in left, scoring Engelhard and giving the Wave a 1-0 lead.
With one out in the bottom of the third, Luis Aviles hit a one-out triple before Jackson Linn one-upped him with a two-run home run over the wall in center field, extending the lead to 3-0.

Later in the frame, Minder singled home Bennett Lee, for the veteran shortstop's second RBI of the day.
The Green Wave got a rally going in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases with no outs. Linn then scored Jared Hart with a sacrifice fly, his third RBI of the day. Lee came up next and drew an RBI walk after going down 0-2. Engelhard followed and blew the game wide open with a two-run, two-out single to put Tulane up 8-0.
Engelhard finished with two RBI, two runs scored, and three hits, his second three hit game in a row.
"I think this game was a huge statement," Engelhard said. "We want to prove that we are the top team in the conference and can beat everyone."
Still in the fourth, Minder added on with a two-run home run of his own, his fourth of the year.

ECU tacked on two runs in the top of the seventh. The Pirates collected three hits with two outs in the inning, their first hits since the first inning.
The Pirates put two more across on a two-run shot by Carter Cunningham.
The Wave scored its 11th run of the day on another sacrifice fly by Minder to make it an 11-4 game.
ECU added a solo home run in the top of the ninth, ECU's fifth and final run.
