Green Wave open against the Jaguars on ESPN3
NEW ORLEANS - The drizzling rain failing on Yulman Stadium did not dampen Tulane football's Monday afternoon practice in preparation for Saturday's home opener against Southern.
Tulane (0-1, 0-0 American Athletic Conference | West) conducted an efficient, 60-minute workout in helmets and shorts to shake off any rust from three days away from the practice field. The Green Wave now turn their focus to the Jaguars (0-1, 0-0 SWAC West) and a matchup set for Saturday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. on ESPN3.
"We lifted weight and got warmed up this morning," said head coach Willie Fritz. "We worked on how to line up with a few things we are putting both offensively and defensively. I thought it was a productive workout."
Tulane goes into its third-ever meeting with Southern with its sights on winning its home opener for the first time since the 2013 season when the Green Wave took care of Jackson State 34-7 on Aug. 31, 2013.
"This game counts the same as last week and counts the same as next week," added Fritz. "We have to put everything into this one like we did for Wake Forest and all the other games this year. This is a big game for us as the home opener. We want to get that good taste back in our mouths. There are just a lot of things to play for. I just want to see a lot of improvement from Week 1 to Week 2."
The matchup with Southern is the first of three games at home for the Green Wave this month with Navy coming to town on Saturday, Sept. 17 (6 p.m., American Sports Network/ESPN3) and UL-Lafayette visiting on Saturday, Sept. 24 (6 or 7 p.m., Broadcast TBA).
