WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Tulane football kicks off the 2016 season with a non-conference tilt against Wake Forest.
Storylines
• Tulane (0-0, 0-0 The American | West) opens up the Willie Fritz era on the road at Wake Forest (0-0, 0-0 ACC) in the 2016 season-opener on Thursday, Sept. 1 at BB&T Field in Winston-Salem, N.C. Kick-off is slated for 6 p.m. CST/7 p.m. EST and the contest will air on ESPN3.
• Willie Fritz will coach his first game at Tulane after being brought on as the 40th head coach of the Green Wave program in Dec. 2015. Fritz comes to Tulane from Georgia Southern.
• Tulane is looking for its first season-opening win since the Green Wave defeated Jackson State, 34-7, on Aug. 31, 2013. Tulane fell at Tulsa and against Duke to open the 2014 and 2015 seasons, respectively.
• The Green Wave will have a new signal caller this season, as no quarterback on the roster has logged a collegiate start. Redshirt-sophomore Glen Cuiellette and true freshmen Johnathan Brantley and Darius Bradwell are 1-2-3 on the depth chart.
• Tulane returns its leading rusher in junior running back Dontrell Hilliard, who rushed for 646 yards on 115 attempts (5.6 avg.) and six touchdowns in 2015.
• Offensive lineman Chris Taylor will anchor a line that will see at least two new starters on the right side.
• 79.5% of Tulane's rushing gain yardarge returns, as 1,441 positive yards of 1,812 return this season.
• Tulane's receiving corps got a huge boost when senior Devon Breaux (25 yards, 431 yards, 3 TDs in 2015) returrned to the team after taking the spring off. Breaux led the team in YPC in 2015 (17.2).
• Junior running back Dontrell Hilliard and redshirt-junior running back Sherman Badie led the 2015 team in all-purpose yards per game at 76.1 and 75.4, respectively, and both return this year.
• Tulane's top tackler from a year ago, Nico Marley (62 solo, 20 assists), anchors a linebacking corps in 2015 that also sees Eric Thomas, Rae Juan Marbley, Eric Bowie and Zachery Harris return.
• Senior defensive tackle Tanzel Smart, who paced the squad with 15.0 tackles for loss, returns, as does fellow defensive linemen Robert Kennedy, Sean Wilson and Ade Aruna.
• Secondary stalwarts Richard Allen, Parry Nickerson, Donnie Lewis Jr., Jarrod Franklin and Roderic Teamer all return after starting last year.
