NEW ORLEANS - Tulane football readied for its 2016 opener at Wake Forest with spirited morning practice in shorts and helmets at Yulman Stadium.
"Really today was a 'Thursday' practice before a Saturday game," said Green Wave head coach Willie Fritz. "This was the first time we did this practice without pads on. It takes a little while for the guys to get used to my routine, how I like to do things and make it their routine. We'll get better at it."
Part of that routine, Coach Fritz added, is making sure the team locks in its focus across the board in final hours before face a hungry Demon Deacon squad out of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
"I call it the final 48, the final 48 hours," said Fritz. "It's just doing the little things right leading up to the ballgame. After you have practice two days out from the game, really the physical part of preparation is really done. It's eating right, hydrating correctly, getting the proper amount of rest, stretching, looking at your playbook a little more, avoiding distractions and getting yourself where you are able to really exert the most amount energy on game day."
Thursday's kickoff in Winston-Salem, N.C., is set for 6:00 p.m. CT on ACC Network Extra and ESPN3. The following week, the Green Wave opens at home against Southern on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 7:00 p.m.
