Moore's 2000 Game-by-Game Stats
SEASON ONE
GAME
ONE September 2, 2000 - OXFORD, Miss.
Tulane 20, No. 18 Ole Miss 49
After a strong preseason, true freshman running back Mewelde Moore
entered game one of his career as the No. 2 running back on the
Green Wave depth chart. However, in his debut against the 18th-ranked
Rebels from Ole Miss, the 6-1 freshman rushed for a team-high 82
yards in a losing effort, including a third quarter rush of 22 yards
that led to a Wave touchdown.
"We knew Mewelde had talent. We just had to see him get out
there and do it," Tulane coach Chris Scelfo said after Moore's
impressive debut. "I was surprised at how poised he was all
day. But we knew the ability was there."
GAME TWO
September 16, 2000 - Greenville, N.C.
Tulane 17, East Carolina 37
Playing against the preseason co-favorites for the Conference USA
title, freshman Mewelde Moore did not show any fear. The Baton Rouge
native rushed 22 times for 131 yards and also added two catches
for 56 yards in the loss. It was the first 100-yard rushing game
for a Wave back since 1998.
"We knew he was a very talented player, but his maturity is
far beyond what we had expected,"Tulane coach Chris Scelfo
said. "We didn't know how well he'd grasp the system, and adjusting
to this level of competition was a concern. Until they do it, you're
not sure."
GAME THREE
September 23, 2000 - Dallas, Texas
Tulane 29, SMU 17
Mewelde Moore quickly showed fans and foes alike that his 100-yard
rushing effort against East Carolina was no fluke. The freshman
back piled up 104 yards on 17 carries and also snagged four more
receptions for 21 yards as the Green Wave defeated SMU, 29-17. Late
in the first half, Moore dashed through the Mustang defense for
a 42-yard gain to set up a Wave field goal, which made it 22-10
at the break. His rushing effort pushed him to the top of the Conference
USA rushing leaders and also among the national leaders.
GAME FOUR
September 30, 2000 - New Orleans, La.
Tulane 24, Cincinnati 19
Playing in his first career home game, Mewelde Moore showed the
Superdome fans what they had been missing. The true freshman rushed
for 114 yards on 15 carries to lead the Green Wave to a 24-19 win
over Cincinnati. It was the third straight 100-yard rushing game
for Moore, who also climbed to 431 rushing yards after four games,
surpassing the Wave's full season leader from 1999 (Toney Converse,
366 yards). However, an ankle injury suffered in the third quarter
would hamper his amazing rookie season the rest of the way.
"I knew we had a class person, a guy that was a good student,"coach
Chris Scelfo said. "And most of the time, that transfers to
the field. (But) I think he's exceeded everybody‚s expectations
but his."
INJURED
October 7, 2000 - Lafayette, La.
Tulane 38, UL-Lafayette 37
Tulane still managed a victory as Mewelde Moore sat out the game
due to a severe ankle sprain, suffered during the third quarter
of the Cincinnati game.
GAME FIVE
October 14, 2000 - New Orleans, La.
Tulane 24, No. 16 Southern Miss 56
Still hampered by a bad ankle, Mewelde Moore returned to the lineup
for the Green Wave. However, he struggled to just 34 yards on 14
carries in the loss to the 16th-ranked Golden Eagles. The ankle
injury is expected to bother Moore for the remainder of the season.
GAME SIX
October 21, 2000 - West Point, N.Y.
Tulane 17, Army 21
The ankle injury and the Army defense limited Mewelde Moore's rushing
yards, but neither could stop him from turning in a career-best
receiving day. While running for just 49 yards on 15 carries, Moore
had six receptions for 101 yards, including his first career touchdown,
a 74-yard catch and run from Patrick Ramsey in the second quarter.
It was the first 100-yard receiving day by a Tulane running back
since Michael Pierce in 1988.
GAME SEVEN
October 28, 2000 - Louisville, Ky.
Tulane 32, Louisville 35
Once again, Mewelde Moore exhibited his versatility as the true
freshman caught a career-best nine passes for 70 yards in a hard-fought
loss at Louisville. Moore also rushed 12 times for 55 yards to raise
his season rushing total to 569 yards.
GAME EIGHT
November 4, 2000 - New Orleans, La.
Tulane 41, Houston 23
Facing the prospect of a losing season, Tulane was pleased to be
able to utilize a healthy Mewelde Moore at running back against
Houston. The fantastic freshman, finally healthy after a mid-season
ankle injury, recorded his fourth 100-yard rushing game of the season
with 118 yards on 22 carries in the win over the Cougars. The freshman
also added his first rushing touchdown of the season on a 10-yard
run early in the fourth quarter to seal the Wave victory.
GAME NINE
November 11, 2000 - New Orleans, La.
Tulane 50, Navy 38
The Green Wave evened its season record at 5-5 in a high-scoring
50-38 affair with Navy at the Superdome. And once again, Mewelde
Moore served as a perfect complement to quarterback Patrick Ramsey.
While Ramsey threw for five touchdowns, Moore carried the ball 18
times for 99 yards, narrowly missing his fifth 100-yard game of
the year. The freshman back also caught three passes for 48 yards,
while scoring on a 12-yard run in the second quarter. By climbing
to 786 rushing yards, he set a Tulane freshman record; he also pushed
over 1,000 all-purpose yards for the season in the game.
GAME 10
November 18, 2000 - New Orleans, La.
Tulane 37, Memphis 14
Mewelde Moore closed his rookie campaign in style, rushing for 100
yards for the fifth game of his career and helping the Wave roll
to victory and a winning season. Moore carried 23 times for 104
yards in the victory, while adding four catches for 22 yards. Memphis
had entered the game with the nation‚s top-ranked run defense.
Moore's total was more than any other TEAM had logged against the
Tigers.
Moore's outstanding freshman year would be capped by his earning
Conference USA Freshman of the Year honors, as well as Freshman
All-America recognition and All-Louisiana honors. His season total
of 890 rushing yards was the fourth-highest season total for the
Wave and the most since David Abercrombie ran for 993 in 1970.
"Mewelde brings a dimension to us that we haven't had here
in a while, a bigger back that can catch the football and also run
and get in the open field," Tulane coach Chris Scelfo said
after Moore won the league's Freshman of the Year award. "He's
got a tremendous attitude and confidence.
"He epitomizes
the true student-athlete. The impact he made on our team had a direct
result on our team's success on offense. The toughness he showed
playing through injury will help him develop even further in the
future."
SEASON
TWO
GAME 11
August 25, 2001 - Provo, Utah
Tulane 35, BYU 70
Some may have wondered about Mewelde Moore's football conditioning
after spending the summer playing professional baseball in the San
Diego Padres‚ system. The questions were answered quickly.
The 6-1 sophomore opened his second season by bursting off tackle
for a 75-yard touchdown run on the second play from scrimmage to
give the Wave a 7-0 lead against the Cougars. Despite suffering
a loss in the game, Moore gained a then-career-high 176 yards on
the ground in the game, tied for the 11th best rushing game in school
history. His 75-yard dash is tied for 13th among long runs at Tulane.
For good measure, he added 66 receiving yards and 10 yards on returns
for 252 all-purpose yards, the third-most in school history up to
that point.
GAME 12
September 1, 2001 - Baton Rouge, La.
Tulane 17, LSU 48
Playing against a No. 14 LSU team that would go on to win the Sugar
Bowl, Mewelde Moore was held to 65 yards on 22 carries. However,
the versatile back also added 51 yards with seven receptions to
finish with 116 all-purpose yards against the Tigers.
GAME 13
September 8, 2001 - New Orleans, La.
Tulane 24, East Carolina 51
Mewelde Moore turned in another fine performance in a losing effort
for the Green Wave. The sophomore star posted his seventh career
100-yard rushing game to move into a tie for second in Tulane history.
He also added seven catches for 66 yards and a touchdown.
GAME 14
September 22, 2001 - New Orleans, La.
Tulane 29, UCF 36
Mewelde Moore continued his punishing efforts on the football field
against UCF by rushing for 134 yards and snagging four passes for
15 yards. A six-yard rushing touchdown by Moore in the third quarter
pulled the Wave within two at 21-19 and his five-yard receiving
score in the fourth knotted the game at 29-29 with 5:04 to go. After
four games, Moore was up to 482 rushing yards for the year and with
1372 career yards, he already ranked 12th all-time at Tulane.
GAME 15
September 29, 2001 - New Orleans, La.
Tulane 41, Southern 7
The inaugural Big Easy Classic between Southern University and Tulane
quickly turned into a Mewelde Moore showcase at the Superdome. The
sophomore carried the ball 25 times for a career-high 201 yards,
just the third player in school history to rush for over 200 yards
in a game. For good measure, he added five receptions for 70 yards
as the Wave rolled over the Jaguars and Moore received Conference
USA Player of the Week honors.
"Southern either brought everything or they sat back and waited
for the pass,"said Green Wave quarterback Patrick Ramsey. "When
they sat back, Mewelde killed them. The guy ran the ball so hard
today. We had a short field, and he kind of made them pay for that."
GAME 16
October 6, 2001 - Cincinnati, Ohio
Tulane 33, Cincinnati 46
After a 200-yard game against Southern did not vault Mewelde Moore
into the national lead in rushing, the sophomore tailback decided
to surpass himself in his next outing. Cincinnati took the brunt
of a record-setting 249-yard rushing evening by Moore, which lifted
him into the national lead in rushing. The Wave standout also caught
six passes for 87 yards to finish with 336 all-purpose yards, shattering
the Tulane and C-USA records. His 249 rushing yards broke the 31-year
old Green Wave single-game record as well.
"First of all, I give all credit to God, and that‚s the
main important ingredient for me playing football," Moore said
after his record-setting performance."I'm so happy that I broke
the records. But it's all dimmed by the loss. No matter what
I do personally, it's all about winning."
"Mewelde
is a unique player,"Tulane coach Chris Scelfo said. "He
comes to work hard every day. He's got a tremendous passion for
the game. Everything he does, he does it right and does it as hard
as he can do."
GAME 17
October 13, 2001 - New Orleans, La.
Tulane 48, TCU 22
Despite an "off" day for Mewelde Moore, Tulane rolled to
an upset victory over TCU at Homecoming 2001. Moore rushed for a
mortal 88 yards on 21 carries, including a nine-yard touchdown score.
Those 88 yards pushed him to 1,020 yards for the season, the first
back in the nation to surpass the 1,000-yard mark, and just the
second Green Wave played to crack the milestone. A sprained shoulder
limited his action in the second half of the blowout.
"I told Mewelde that he really helped us win this game with
the past two games he had," said Wave quarterback Patrick Ramsey.
"They [TCU] really committed to stopping the run, and that
helped us get some guys behind them. They knew they had to respect
Mewelde."
GAME 18
October 20, 2001 - Birmingham, Ala.
Tulane 27, UAB 34
For the first time in his career, a team found a way to slow down
Mewelde Moore. A ferocious UAB defense coupled with Moore playing
with a painful sprained shoulder, limited the sophomore to 35 yards
on 15 carries, although he did also collected 38 receiving yards
on five catches.
GAME 19
October 27, 2001 - West Point, N.Y.
Tulane 35, Army 42
For the third game in a row, Mewelde Moore was held below 100 rushing
yards. However, this time, Moore punished the opposing defense by
tallying a career-high 168 receiving yards on nine catches. The
Wave sophomore had scoring grabs of 40-yards and 32-yards in the
game and also added a two-yard TD jaunt, but it was not enough for
Tulane. His receiving total set a Tulane school record for most
receiving yards by a running back, while his 248 all-purpose yards
lifted him to 1,824 for the year, setting another Green Wave record.
GAME 20
November 3, 2001 - New Orleans, La.
Tulane 7, Louisville 52
The pre-season favorites in Conference USA showed their skills in
a 52-7 blowout of the Green Wave. With the entire offense struggling
to click, Mewelde Moore was held to just 27 rushing yards in the
loss.
GAME 21
November 10, 2001 - Annapolis, Md.
Tulane 42, Navy 28
An offensive clinic by the Green Wave was highlighted by another
record-setting performance by sophomore running back Mewelde Moore.
The Wave rolled to a 42-28 victory as Moore became the first player
in school history to earn 100 yards rushing and 100 yards receiving
in the same game. In fact, only one other player in school history
(Claude Mason, 1956-58) had 100-yard rushing and 100-yard receiving
games in their full career, let alone the same game. Moore also
set the school and Conference USA season rushing records with 1,293
yards and one game to go. The Baton Rouge native had a pair of rushing
touchdowns (11 yards and three yards) in the game.
"This
is the first time we got a win and some records; this is what you
want," Moore said after the game. "This is how it's supposed
to be. I'm just happy we came out with a win. Everybody's happy.
I can celebrate now."
GAME 22
November 17, 2001 - Hattiesburg, Miss.
Tulane 6, Southern Miss
The Green Wave closed its season with a tough loss on the road as
a strong Southern Miss defense stopped everyone except Mewelde Moore.
The sophomore tailback had his school record-setting seventh 100-yard
rushing game of the season with 128 yards and a touchdown. It was
also his 12th 100-yard game of his career, one off the school record.
Moore's touchdown, his team-leading 15th of the year, came on a
34-yard scamper in the second quarter.
Moore closes the year with 1,421 rushing yards on 262 carries, both
school records. He also has 65 receptions for 756 yards. He is the
only player in NCAA I-A history to rush for over 1,250 yards and
catch more than 60 passes in a single season.
