Legendary Tulanian M.L. Lagarde has been a fixture in New Orleans and around Tulane since his days as a collegiate tennis player for the Green Wave in 1946. Now in his 31st year as a member of the Tulane athletics staff, Lagarde serves as a special assistant to athletic director Rick Dickson. He was inducted into the Tulane Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003.

Lagarde earned his bachelor?s degree from Tulane in 1952 and enjoyed a successful career as a high school basketball, baseball and football coach at St. Aloysius and Jesuit high schools even during his collegiate days. He was a part of six city and four state championships in baseball, four city and state titles in basketball and two city titles in football.

In 1959, Lagarde retired from coaching to open Lakewood School, where he served as headmaster for 15 years while also covering Tulane athletics and high school sports for The Times-Picayune.

He joined the Green Wave staff in 1974 as sports information director and served as SID for 10 years before being named assistant AD. He was promoted to associate AD in 1992. Lagarde received the Mac Russo Award from the Louisiana Sports Writers Association in 1984 and earned the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame?s Distinguished Service Award in 1993. He received the Scoop Hudgins SID Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999 from the All-America Football Foundation. Lagarde also served as a member of the Final Four Media Committee for 10 years.

In addition to his duties in athletics, LaGarde served on the staffs of a pair of Louisiana governors, David Treen (1981) and Edwin Edwards (all terms).

While in school, Lagarde lettered in tennis, was a member of the Junior Davis Cup team and was ranked nationally among junior players. In addition to his Tulane degree, he earned a master?s degree in education from Loyola University.
