IRVING, Texas - Tulane's volleyball program was awarded with the Conference USA Sport Academic Award for the 2012-13 academic year for their efforts in the classroom, announced the league offices on Thursday.
The Sport Academic Award is given to the team in each conference-sponsored sport with the highest GPA for the academic year. The Green Wave volleyball team posted a GPA of 3.563.
"Our academic standard is known to our student-athletes, and we always take pride doing well in the classroom," said Tulane director of volleyball Sinisa Momic. "It's nice to know that we did so well compared to the other great teams in our conference. This honor is important to the individual futures of our student-athletes, as well as our program."
Grace Weaver, Mel Mandelbaum, Izabela Grot, Milena Dragovic and Amber Bennett all earned Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll honors in April for posting a GPA of 3.0 or better. Olivia Utt was named a recipient of the C-USA Academic Medal, given to student-athletes who achieved a 3.75 GPA or better during the year. She notched a GPA of 3.918 during the fall semester and followed that up with a perfect 4.0 in the spring.
Dragovic was not far behind in her studies, as she recorded a 3.250 GPA in the fall before a perfect 4.0 spring semester. Grot had back-to-back semesters with GPAs of 3.571 and 3.835 during her senior campaign. Weaver's GPAs of 3.168 and 3.383 in the fall and spring semesters, respectively, joined her with Utt, Grot and Dragovic as the only Greenies to post 3.0 GPAs or better in both semesters.
Mandelbaum's spring semester and Elysa Jackson's spring, in which they both posted identical 3.734 GPAs, along with Bennett's spring (3.534), Lilly Wolfe's spring (3.333), Azarri Badawi's fall (3.308), Milica Jovic's fall (3.231), and Anna Wruck's spring (3.200) made the award a true team effort.
