NEW ORLEANS - Tulane University Director of Athletics Rick Dickson - along with Tulane Director of Track and Field Eric Peterson - announced that the Fifth Annual Tulane Athletics 5K will take place at 8 a.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2013. The 5K (3.1 miles) fun run/walk will take place in City Park.
Green Wave coaches, staff and student-athletes will participate in the event, with the goal being to increase the Tulane Athletics Fund (TAF) donor base to a new record level. This year, Tulane Athletics has set a goal of 500 participants and sponsors for the 5K. In order to reach that goal, each and every student-athlete and coach must be sponsored by Green Wave supporters, family members, or friends. The event is open to all ages, including children.
"We are excited about the fifth-annual Tulane Athletics 5K," stated Peterson. "It's going to be a big sports day for our athletic department out at Tad Gormley Stadium in City Park. We've moved the 5K off campus to offer an opportunity for everyone who wants to participate to use this as an official tune-up for the Crescent City Classic in late March."
It will be just the beginning of a day full of Tulane athletic events at City Park.
"There will be an official football scrimmage after the 5K, and then we'll have our opening outdoor meet - the Tulane Team Challenge - later in the day," added Peterson. "Many of the local teams will be participating in that meet."
Registration at the event will begin at 6:30 a.m., with the race starting shortly thereafter at 8 a.m. The party will continue after the race with entertainment and free food and beverages for all participants. The Tulane Athletics 5K is open for anyone to register to run for $30. To sponsor a runner, student-athlete, coach, athletic director, staff member, or any one of the Green Wave teams, please visit www.TulaneAthletics5K.com.
The more than 500 people who have participated in the 5K in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 include Tulane faculty and staff, students, TAF donors, season ticket holders, alumni and friends from all over the country, as well as many of the area's runners and walkers. Some current Tulane athletes will be competing, as well.
"A lot of our athletes will be actively participating in the event, whether working at a station, helping with registration or running the event," added Peterson. "The entire cross country team will be running, even though they'll be competing in an event later that day."
There are five levels of sponsorship:
-For $150, you can sponsor the Director of Athletics.
-For $125, you get to sponsor the event, and you also receive a hole sign at the Tulane Classic on April 15.
-For $100, you can sponsor a Head Coach.
